On 20 November, FRS hosted a workshop titled ‘Social and Community Resilience - How to Better Cope with Future Crises?’. With three talks, a panel discussion and a networking session, with guests exclusively from the Swiss Singapore Association, the German Singapore Association, the alumni chapter of ETH Zürich, and the alumni chapter of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Key insights from the three talks were:

  • In her talk, Prof. Dr Renate Schubert introduced the concept of social resilience, and its importance globally in an age of increasing threats. She also highlighted the interdependence of technical and social resilience, explaining the importance of social capital in this context.

  • Dr Adam Roberts presented his research on financial resilience, specifically how the access to financial services and financial knowledge contributes to the building of social capital.

  • external pageDr Olivia Jensen from the Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk (IPUR) at the National University of Singapore (NUS), presented her findings related to subjective risk perception in different countries, highlighting the high values of Singaporeans’ risk perception compared to the values in China or South Korea.

The panel discussion focused particularly on topics of mental health (as a crucial pillar of social resilience), and current and future challenges for Singapore society.
